Ep.34 - Gentrification and Homeownership

We’re wrapping up Homeownership Month discussing the impacts of gentrification and the importance of homeownership. If you look up the many definitions of gentrification there is an underlying understanding that those definitions were not likely written by people of color. Most definitions pretty up gentrification to almost always make it only appear positive; “improves housing”, “attracts new business” or ‘‘makes it more refined.” But what it doesn’t address is the displacement of those that were in the community before the “wealthy” moved in through rising property taxes. It doesn’t address how funding was unavailable to those previously in the community that yet funding shows up for the wealthy in new sidewalks, schools, and stores. It doesn’t address how it erases history and landmarks.

This week we sit down with Winston Robinson to discuss why owning your home is one way to fight back against gentrification. Winston, known in his community as Wilmo, is the creator of an epic entertaining housing fair that teaches people in his community why homeownership is so important. At this housing fair, he takes it a step further by bringing in resources that can aid a person in purchasing their home. It is not only important to own a home, but it is equally as important to be intentional about where to buy your property and Mr. Robinson breaks it all down in this episode. Check with your local county tax assessor for property tax assistance. There may be programs you are eligible for.
