S1.Ep.18 - Maternal Health and Healthcare Bias

Persons of Color have a sordid relationship with healthcare. There is a valid distrust of a medical system that historically mistreats them. And healthcare bias continues today. Women of Color, specifically Black, American Indian, and Alaska Native women are two to three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than women of the Caucasian persuasion. For many Women of Color, conception and the birth process are riddled with fear and frustration as they overcome inadequate medical advice and attention. Problems such as fibroids or pre-eclampsia, both more prevalent in African American women, are treated differently and offered different resolutions based on race and economic abilities.

Dr. Cynthia Wesley is a board certified OBGYN and national speaker. On this week’s podcast we sit with her to discuss the bias, its affects and ways you can properly advocate for your health concerns.
