S1.Ep.15 - Leaving a Legacy: Insurance

When it comes to the topic of death and planning for one’s death, people avoid it like the plaque. But whether you choose to discuss it or not, it is a given that you will die someday. Unfortunately in the African American community there are still way too many that view having life insurance as an option. So let’s look at some numbers. The average creamation with no body viewing costs $400. Add a viewing, which requires the deceased to be embalmed and it jumps to $4000. If you want a full funeral service and a burial you’re looking at $9000 on the low end. Without life insurance how does the family left behind pay for this costs? More importantly why would one leave them in a position and expect them to?

When getting life insurance there are so many things to take into consideration. How much will it costs? How much do you need? How often do you have to pay on your policy for it not to lapse? But do you ever think about leveraging life insurance as a way to create generational wealth? On this week’s podcast we sit with State Farm’s Chairman Circle Award wining life insurance agent, Emma Allen, to discuss why life insurance is not optional. After all, Go Fund Me is not a life insurance plan.

This week we advise our dear diva on choosing “head or heart” between two relationship potentials. If you have a personal situation you would like to write in about and have your letter read anonymously on our podcast, head over to our contact form and select the Dear Diva option or email us directly at divaadvice@gmail.com.
