Ep.39 - The Bell Tolls: Advanced Maternal Health
Woman’s Suffrage. Woman’s Movement. Woman’s Liberation. Feminism. Despite all the progression, women are still commonly seen as not whole if they do not have a husband or a child. But as women gain more education, start businesses, and climb corporate ladders their desires to have children often become a priority after achieving career and personal goals and becoming financial stable. Now women are commonly having children in their mid-thirties and beyond. Enter AMA.
Advanced Maternal Age (AMA), is defined as maternity at the age 35 years or older. AMA is associated with several adverse pregnancy outcomes including preterm birth, low birth weight, still birth, chromosomal defects, labor complications, and cesarean section. Despite this fact, with each passing year women are putting off having children until their 30’s and 40’s. And that’s their business!! But the reason the “your clock is ticking” commentary is so insensitive is because every women’s journey is different. And with the increase in fibroids in african american women, having children later isn’t always related choice.
Dr. Cynthia Wesley is a board certified OBGYN, author and national speaker. On this week’s podcast we sit with her to discuss her own journey with AMA and childbirth, the pros and cons for delay, and options available if you are deciding to make the wait. In honor of Ovarian Cancer Awareness month, we also discuss what screens you can ask your GYN for and keys to early detection.
